Scottie Scheffler Claims Olympic Gold and Second Masters Title, Leads PGA Tour Player of the Year Nominees
Scottie Scheffler’s spectacular 2024 season has firmly placed him at the top of the golfing world. The 28-year-old American achieved incredible milestones, including his second Masters green jacket in three years and a gold medal at the Paris Olympics. Scheffler, along with Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy, was named as one of the nominees for the 2024 PGA Tour Player of the Year award, also known as the Jack Nicklaus Award.
The award, named after the legendary 18-time major winner Jack Nicklaus, will be decided by votes from PGA Tour members, with the results set to be announced in December. Meanwhile, the Arnold Palmer Award for PGA Tour Rookie of the Year will also be decided in the same voting process.
Scheffler’s Unparalleled Season
Scottie Scheffler’s dominance throughout the 2024 PGA season was marked by seven tournament victories, including triumphs at some of the most prestigious events. In addition to his second Masters win, Scheffler claimed titles at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players Championship, the Heritage, the Memorial, the Travelers Championship, and the season-ending Tour Championship, where he secured the FedEx Cup.
Scheffler led the PGA Tour in earnings and scoring, finishing the season as the money leader and capturing the Byron Nelson Award for the lowest scoring average at 68.645 strokes. In a remarkable display of consistency, he never missed a cut and notched 16 top-10 finishes across the season.
Xander Schauffele Breaks Through
Xander Schauffele, a consistent performer in recent years, enjoyed a breakout 2024 season. The 31-year-old American secured his first two major championships, winning the PGA Championship and the British Open. Schauffele also ended the season with 15 top-10 finishes and no missed cuts. His scoring average of 69.137 placed him second only to Scheffler, making him a strong contender for the PGA Tour Player of the Year honor.
McIlroy’s Resilience
Rory McIlroy, another nominee, added two PGA Tour titles to his illustrious career in 2024. The Northern Irishman partnered with Shane Lowry to win the Zurich Classic pairs event and claimed victory at the Wells Fargo Championship for the fourth time. Although McIlroy came agonizingly close to winning his fifth major title at the U.S. Open, he finished second to Bryson DeChambeau.
The 35-year-old veteran also displayed remarkable consistency, with 15 top-10 finishes and no missed cuts throughout the season.
Rookie of the Year Race: Dunlap, Pavon Lead the Pack
The 2024 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year race features four strong contenders: Matthieu Pavon, Nick Dunlap, Jake Knapp, and Max Greyserman.
Among them, 20-year-old Nick Dunlap emerged as the season’s breakout star. Starting the year as an amateur, Dunlap made history by winning the American Express title on a sponsor’s exemption. After turning professional, he claimed the Barracuda Championship, becoming the first player in PGA Tour history to win as both an amateur and a professional in the same season.
Frenchman Matthieu Pavon also had a remarkable rookie year. The 32-year-old won the Farmers Insurance Open, finished third at Pebble Beach, and placed fifth at the U.S. Open. Pavon was the only rookie to qualify for the Tour Championship, further cementing his place among the year’s top newcomers.
Jake Knapp, 30, claimed his first PGA Tour victory at the Mexico Open, while 29-year-old Max Greyserman demonstrated consistent excellence with three runner-up finishes.
Voting and Announcement
The winners of the Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer awards will be determined by a vote of PGA Tour members, with voting open until December 4. The results will be announced later in December, capping off an unforgettable season that showcased the incredible talent and depth of modern golf.
