Scottie Scheffler, fresh off his recent triumph at the Masters, arrived at Valhalla on Monday for the PGA Championship. However, the congratulations he received weren’t solely for his golfing achievements. Instead, they were for an entirely different milestone: becoming a father to a newborn baby boy.
Scheffler proudly shared that he and his wife had named their son Bennett, who was born on May 8. As he made his way around the course, fellow golfer Jon Rahm, himself a father of two sons, was quick to offer his congratulations, accompanied by a warm hug and a knowing question about sleep deprivation.
Despite the whirlwind of becoming a new parent, Scheffler hasn’t lost his winning momentum. Having clinched victory at the RBC Heritage just a week after securing his second Masters green jacket, he heads into the PGA Championship with an impressive record, winning four of his last five tournaments. The only exception was a commendable runner-up finish at the Houston Open.
Even with formidable competition from the likes of Rory McIlroy, fresh off two consecutive wins, including one alongside Shane Lowry in a team event, and defending champion Brooks Koepka, who recently claimed his first victory of the year at LIV Golf Singapore, Scheffler remains the betting favorite.
McIlroy’s victory at the PGA Championship at Valhalla in 2014 remains a highlight, marking the last time he clinched a major title. Meanwhile, Koepka’s strong performance in 2014, tying for 15th place, preceded his entry into the PGA Tour.
As Scheffler tees off, he has his sights set on making history by becoming the first player since Jordan Spieth in 2015, and only the fifth player since 1960, to win the first two majors of the year. With his talent, determination, and now, the added inspiration of fatherhood, Scheffler is poised to make waves in the golfing world once again.
