Scottie Scheffler, the reigning Masters champion, was detained by police just hours before he was scheduled to tee off in the second round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla. Scheffler, who was among the favorites for the tournament, was due to start at 1:48 PM BST (8:48 AM local time). However, footage emerged showing him in handcuffs earlier this morning.
The incident occurred near the course’s entrance, where a car accident had prompted a significant police presence. Scheffler was stopped by officers while attempting to drive past the scene. He was asked to exit his vehicle and was briefly handcuffed before the situation was resolved.
Following his release, the PGA Championship issued a statement explaining that the start of the second round would be delayed due to the serious accident near the course. “The start of Round 2 is delayed due to a serious accident near the course. The next update will be at 7:30 AM (12:30 PM BST) and the first starting time will be at least 1 hour after an update is made,” the statement read.
Scheffler had recorded a four-under round of 67 on the first day, placing him tied for 12th, five shots behind leader Xander Schauffele. Friday’s play might also face further disruptions due to inclement weather forecasted for Valhalla.
