Professional golfer Scottie Scheffler opted to skip the Wells Fargo Championship in anticipation of the imminent arrival of his and his wife Meredith’s first child, as they gear up for the birth with the PGA Championship just around the corner.
Ranked as the world No. 1, Scheffler is scheduled for pre-tournament interviews for the PGA Championship on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. ET, although as of last Thursday, the couple was still awaiting the baby’s arrival, as reported by Golfweek.com.
In contrast to PGA Tour events, which require players to commit to the next tournament by 5 p.m. on Friday, the PGA Championship’s deadline is set for the following Tuesday at 5 p.m., unless otherwise notified by the player, according to a PGA spokesperson.
Reflecting on his plans, Scheffler commented during last month’s RBC Heritage, which he clinched as his most recent Tour victory: “I’ll obviously take a break when the baby comes. But we’ll see. I don’t know what life looks like. But up until when the baby comes, I’m going to play this week and then I’ll go home and basically just wait. We’re due at the end of the month. We’ll see when the baby comes.”
Following his impressive win at last month’s Masters, and a remarkable streak featuring four victories in his last five starts, Scheffler emerges as the clear favorite in betting circles for next week’s tournament at Valhalla.
