Scottie Scheffler clinched his sixth PGA Tour victory of the season by triumphing at the Travelers Championship, joining an elite group alongside Arnold Palmer. This win makes Scheffler the first player since Palmer in 1962 to secure six victories on the Tour before July 1st. According to the PGA Tour communications team, he also became the fourth player since 1983 to achieve six or more wins in a single season, with the last being Tiger Woods in 2009.
Scheffler’s bogey-free final round of 5-under 64 propelled him to a 22-under total, edging out Tom Kim, who shot a 4-under 65. This victory was especially significant for Scheffler, as he sought to rebound from a lackluster performance at the U.S. Open. A critical bogey on the par-3 8th proved costly for Kim. Despite making a crucial birdie putt on the 18th to tie Scheffler and force a playoff, Kim’s approach fell short during the extra hole.
On the playoff hole, Scheffler executed a flawless approach shot while Kim’s second shot found a bunker, failing to apply pressure on his opponent. Scheffler, maintaining his composure, two-putted to secure the win against his close friend.
The final moments of the regulation play were marred by an unexpected disturbance from protestors. As the leading group approached the 18th green, five individuals affiliated with “Extinction Rebellion” invaded the course, throwing white and red substances onto the green. Despite the swift police intervention and cleanup efforts involving blowers and towels, the agronomy team and officials ultimately decided to relocate the hole for the playoff due to the damage. Both Scheffler and Kim, alongside Akshay Bhatia, witnessed the incident but remained unfazed.
This victory not only highlighted Scheffler’s resilience and skill but also marked his fourth Signature Event win of the season, following his successes at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, The Memorial, and now the Travelers Championship. Additionally, he has claimed titles at the 2024 Masters and The Players Championship. The former Texas Longhorn’s latest triumph earned him $3.6 million, bringing his season’s official earnings to $27,696,858. With much of the season still ahead, Scheffler is on track to break records for the most money won in a single season.
