Scottie Scheffler, one of the PGA Tour’s top players, is planning to adjust his usual pre-tournament routine ahead of this week’s BMW Championship, following an opportunity to use golf carts during Monday’s practice session. Scheffler, 28, who finished solo fourth at the FedEx St. Jude Championship on Sunday, is currently leading the FedEx Cup standings by a significant margin.
This season, Scheffler has secured 11 top-five finishes, including six victories, establishing himself as a dominant force in the race for the FedEx Cup. With a lead of approximately 1,500 points over his closest competitor, Xander Schauffele, Scheffler is well-positioned to maintain his advantage heading into the final events of the season.
Hideki Matsuyama, who won the FedEx St. Jude Championship, has also made a strong move up the rankings, climbing to third place in the standings. The BMW Championship, which is the second event in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, will be held at Castle Pines Golf Club in Colorado, a new and challenging venue for the PGA Tour’s elite players.
Castle Pines GC, known for its high altitude and hilly terrain, will present a different type of test for the competitors. To accommodate the challenging conditions, the PGA Tour and tournament sponsors have provided golf carts for all players and caddies during Monday’s practice round.
Scheffler announced on Sunday night that he plans to take full advantage of the golf carts by adjusting his preparation schedule. Normally, he would take a lighter day on Monday and begin his full practice on Tuesday. However, given the unique circumstances this week, Scheffler intends to make Monday his primary practice day, allowing himself a more relaxed day on Tuesday.
“We’re going to head over there tonight,” Scheffler shared with reporters at TPC Southwind after his performance at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. “I heard we get golf carts tomorrow, so I’m going to enjoy that in the middle of the Playoffs. We’re going to go play some golf tomorrow. I’ll probably do a lighter day Tuesday, and then I think we have a pro-am Wednesday. Typically, Monday would be my light off-day. This week going forward with the carts on Monday, I’m going to make that my full day of practice and take a slow day on Tuesday.”
As the top 50 players in the season-long FedEx Cup standings head into the BMW Championship, all eyes will be on Scheffler as he seeks to maintain his lead and position himself for a strong showing at the Tour Championship. If Scheffler remains in the top spot after this week, he will begin the Tour Championship with a two-shot lead, putting him in prime position to capture his first FedEx Cup title and the record $25 million bonus prize awarded to the champion.
