Scottie Scheffler, a former standout at the University of Texas, has been named to the 2024 United States Olympic Men’s Golf team, as announced by USA Golf on Tuesday. Scheffler will join teammates Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark, and Collin Morikawa to compete at the Paris Olympics from August 1-4, 2024. The event will be held at Le Golf National in Guyancourt, near Paris.
Scheffler’s inclusion marks a historic moment as he becomes the first golfer from the University of Texas to represent Team USA in the Olympics. Previous Longhorns who have competed in the Olympics include Jhonattan Vegas, who represented Venezuela in both the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and Brandon Stone, who represented South Africa in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The selection of players for the Olympic team was based on their positions in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). According to Olympic qualifying guidelines, players ranked within the top 15 in the world gain automatic spots, with a maximum of four players per country. Scheffler is currently ranked No. 1 in the world, followed by Schauffele at third, Clark at fifth, and Morikawa at seventh.
After the top-15 automatic qualifiers, additional spots are allocated based on world rankings over a two-year period, up to a maximum of two players per country. The men’s golf competition in the Paris Olympics will feature a field of 60 players.
