Scottie Scheffler ramped up his preparations for the upcoming Open Championship with a practice round at the historic Turnberry Golf Course. The 152nd Open is approaching quickly, with golf’s top players heading to Royal Troon to compete in the final major of the year.
Despite his brilliance, Masters champion Scheffler has yet to make a significant mark at The Open, with his best finish being tied for eighth in 2021. However, the 28-year-old Texan is currently the top golfer in the world and arrives in Scotland in excellent form.
In 2024 alone, Scheffler has secured victories in four signature events, including The Players Championship and The Masters, making it one of the most dominant seasons in PGA Tour history. He now aims to bring this strong form to The Open and demonstrate his skill on the Scottish links.
Before Thursday’s opening round at Troon, Scheffler and his friend and fellow Open contender Sam Burns practiced at Trump Turnberry to acclimatize to local conditions and refine their skills. Turnberry, located just down the coast from Troon in South Ayrshire, is a top course in world golf and has hosted The Open four times.
After his practice round on Saturday, Scheffler said, “Thanks for a great day here at Trump Turnberry. We had a lot of fun getting ready for the Open Championship next week. It was a good time, the golf course is in good shape. Thanks, y’all, appreciate it.”
Burns, the winner of last year’s WGC Match Play, added, “We had a blast, awesome golf course, was incredible.”
Scheffler finished T23 at The Open last year as fellow American Brian Harman claimed victory at a rain-soaked Royal Liverpool. However, Scheffler has an impressive major record, with 11 top-ten finishes in the 20 tournaments he has played.
As a two-time major winner, Scheffler displayed his dominance at Augusta to clinch his second Masters title in April. He began his Open preparations in earnest on Sunday, playing a practice round at Troon alongside Burns and Sepp Straka.
