World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler continued his strong performance at the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon, carding a second consecutive round of 1-under 70. This leaves him in a tie for fourth place at 2-under par, five shots behind 2019 Open champion Shane Lowry, who leads after posting a 69.
Scheffler, 28, is aiming for his seventh victory of the season and a third major title in South Ayrshire. However, his caddie, Ted Scott, has been dealing with a bout of food poisoning. During the second round, Scott was seen lying down at various points on the front nine, struggling with his condition.
After the round, Scheffler explained that Scott began feeling ill on Thursday night, possibly due to food poisoning or a stomach bug. Despite feeling better as the day progressed, Scott had not slept much the previous night and considered not caddying in the morning. Nonetheless, he persevered.
“Yeah, he had a bit of food poisoning last night — well, could have been food poisoning, could be some sort of stomach bug. But he seemed to feel better as the day went on. The doc here took good care of him. But he did not sleep very much last night apparently,” Scheffler said.
Scheffler praised Scott’s determination: “He’s a fighter. He did a good job today and battled through it.” He noted the unusual sight of Scott sitting on the 10th tee for 10 minutes while Scheffler putted on the ninth hole.
In his 15 starts on the PGA Tour this season, Scheffler has secured six victories and finished in the top 10 thirteen times. As of June 2024, he has earned $27,696,858 in PGA Tour winnings.
