Scottie Scheffler Reassures Fans After Suffering Back Pain at BMW Championship
Scottie Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked golfer, caused a stir during the BMW Championship when he was seen wincing and clutching his lower back after playing a shot at Castle Pines Golf Club. The sight of Scheffler in discomfort raised concerns among fans and commentators, as it evoked memories of similar scenes involving Tiger Woods, whose back issues eventually took a toll on his career.
The incident occurred on the 17th hole, where Scheffler used a 5-iron to hit his ball off the fairway. As he completed his swing, Scheffler grimaced and motioned towards his lower back, prompting immediate speculation about the severity of the injury.
However, Scheffler quickly sought to downplay the situation, assuring everyone that his back was “fine” and that the discomfort was nothing out of the ordinary. He explained that he had woken up feeling a bit sore and had difficulty loosening up before the round. “Yeah, it’s fine,” Scheffler said. “I woke up just a little sore this morning. I had trouble loosening it up. With it being a little bit tight, it was hard for me to get through it, and I was laboring most of the day to get through the ball.”
The 28-year-old golfer described the particular shot on the 17th, where he attempted to execute a high draw, as one that requires a “big turn, big motion,” which he felt in his back. Despite the discomfort, Scheffler emphasized that there was no cause for alarm and that his usual recovery routine would suffice. “Maybe I hit a few too many balls yesterday or something. It was just a little sore. I’m sure I’ll get some ice on it and stuff. I’ll be totally fine [on Friday],” he added.
Scheffler managed to make par on the 17th hole, although he expressed frustration at not capitalizing on what is considered one of the easier holes on the course. His second shot left him nearly 30 yards short of the hole, and he ultimately missed the opportunity to make birdie on the 18th, finishing the round with a 1-under 69. This result placed him five shots behind the tournament leader, Keegan Bradley, who led with a six-under round.
Despite the minor setback, Scheffler remains focused on building on what has already been a historic season for him. In 2024, he became the first player since Arnold Palmer to secure six PGA Tour wins before July in a single year, and he added to his achievements with an Olympic gold medal in Paris.
As the BMW Championship continues, Scheffler has his sights set on a potential victory that would place him alongside golf legends Vijay Singh and Tiger Woods as the only players to have won seven or more tournaments in a single PGA Tour season in the modern era. He is scheduled to tee off for his second round on Friday, August 23, and fans will be eagerly watching to see if he can overcome this minor injury and continue his stellar performance.
