Scottie Scheffler clinched the gold medal after Jon Rahm’s dramatic collapse in the final round. Rahm, who started Sunday with a share of the lead at 14-under, seemed poised for victory after birdying six of the first ten holes. However, his fortunes changed drastically with a bogey on the 11th, followed by another bogey on the 12th, a double bogey on the 15th, and two more bogeys on the 17th and 18th. Rahm finished with a one-under 70 and missed out on a medal.
Reflecting on his performance, Rahm said, “I’ve been saying all week that I would know how much this means when the tournament was over. Sometimes you know when you win, but you definitely know when you don’t win it, and this just stings on a different emotional level. Hurts right now more than I expected.”
Scheffler’s victory adds to an already impressive season. He secured six wins on the PGA Tour, earned his second green jacket at the Masters, amassed a record $28 million in prize money, and now holds the title of Olympic gold medalist. Notably, Scheffler shot a remarkable 66 in the second round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla in May, just hours after his arrest.
Adding to his joy, Scheffler and his wife, Meredith, welcomed their son, Bennett, on May 8. Meredith and Bennett were present on Sunday to celebrate Scheffler’s triumph.
