Scottie Scheffler’s Uncharacteristic Outburst at the BMW Championship: A Long Season’s Toll
Scottie Scheffler, the World No. 1 golfer, has had a remarkable 2024 season, participating in 17 PGA Tour events and finishing within the top 10 an incredible 16 times. With six victories under his belt this year, every shot Scheffler takes feels critical, potentially determining whether he secures yet another trophy. As he entered the FedEx Cup Playoffs, Scheffler carried a substantial lead, one he was determined to protect.
Despite his typically unflappable demeanor, the pressures of the season finally seemed to catch up with him during the second round of the BMW Championship at Castle Pines in Colorado. It was here that Scheffler, known for his calm and composed nature, displayed uncharacteristic frustration on the 15th green and throughout the round.
In what could be considered a “bad” round by Scheffler’s standards, he struggled across various facets of his game, ultimately finishing with a 72—a score that left him tied for 29th place. Although this might not seem like a disastrous outcome, the Texan’s frustration was palpable. He gestured angrily on several holes, and at one point, even gave what appeared to be a sarcastic salute after putting out for bogey.
The height of his frustration was most evident on the par-4 10th hole. After driving into the right rough, Scheffler mishit his approach shot, sending the ball into the water. His subsequent shot from the drop zone landed just past the flagstick but rolled off the green, leading to a double bogey. His reaction was something rarely seen from Scheffler—an emotional outburst that included a furious exclamation of “What the f—k,” followed by repeated incredulous demands of “HOW?! HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?!”

The NBC Sports commentators, including on-course reporter Jim “Bones” Mackay, noted how unusual it was to see Scheffler struggling so much, particularly on the greens. Mackay remarked, “I have never seen Scottie struggle on the greens like I have today. Really struggling with reading the greens correctly. He’s been very demonstrative out here, and a little sarcastic at times. And I get it. It’s been a long year. He’s played exceptionally well, and he’s probably a little run down. But he’s got to find some energy; he’s got a lot of golf to play and some important things to play for in the next couple of weeks.”
The round of 72 was Scheffler’s second-worst of the year, with only his 73 in the second round of the PGA Championship ranking lower. That round at the PGA Championship was marred by external factors, including an arrest outside Valhalla Golf Club the day before, which led to a disappointing performance after an otherwise promising start with a 67.
For Scheffler, Friday’s round at Castle Pines was the golf equivalent of serving jail time—a tough day on the course that revealed the toll of a long and grueling season.
