Scottie Scheffler’s campaign at The Open came to a disappointing end on Sunday as the world No. 1 endured a disastrous final tee shot. Despite being in contention at Royal Troon, Scheffler’s hopes for a third major title unraveled during the last round.
Starting the day at two-under-par, just two shots behind overnight leader Billy Horschel, Scheffler initially maintained his strong form. However, his performance began to falter with a double bogey on the ninth hole, which he had previously parred in earlier rounds. Although he managed a birdie on the 16th, bringing his score back to three-under, it was too late for him to challenge for the Claret Jug.
The defining moment came on the 72nd hole when a frustrated Scheffler topped his tee shot, sending the ball just 150 yards and into the heavily overgrown grass near the women’s tee mark. The TV cameras struggled to locate the ball, eventually zooming in to reveal its unfortunate landing spot. This mishap resulted in a double bogey, leaving Scheffler with a one-over-par round and one-under overall.
A bogey would have secured Scheffler sole possession of seventh place, but instead, he ended in a three-way tie with Im Sung-jae and Jon Rahm. Both players finished with respective two-under and three-under scores.
Following this disappointing conclusion, Scheffler avoided the press in the mixed zone. The tournament victory went to Xander Schauffele, who finished with an impressive nine-under, narrowly surpassing Justin Rose and Billy Horschel, who tied for second place.
