Scottie Scheffler continued his dominant 2024 PGA Tour season by winning the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut. Despite facing windy conditions on Sunday, Scheffler maintained his composure, shooting a 65 to finish at 22 under par and secure his sixth victory of the season. This achievement makes him the first player since Tiger Woods in 2009 to win six tournaments in a single season.
The tournament featured a strong field with notable performances from Tony Finau, Tom Kim, Patrick Cantlay, and Justin Thomas, who all remained competitive until the final holes. Tom Hoge made an impressive surge with six birdies on the back nine and three in his final four holes, carding a 62 on Sunday to end the tournament at 20 under par, tying for third place with Sungjae Im.
Tom Kim, who was aiming to become the 12th wire-to-wire winner at the Travelers Championship and the first since Jordan Spieth in 2017, delivered a commendable performance but fell just short of matching Scheffler’s brilliance. Kim managed to save par with a tricky six-foot putt on the 17th hole, keeping him within one stroke of Scheffler as they approached the final hole. This result marked Kim’s best finish of the year and only his second top-10 finish of the season.
Scheffler, however, took control on the back nine with three consecutive birdies starting at the 13th hole. He remained steady on the 18th hole, even as protesters briefly interrupted play before being apprehended by the police. Kim made a ten-foot birdie putt on the 18th to force a playoff, but ultimately faltered with a bogey on the first playoff hole, while Scheffler made par to clinch the victory.
Tom Hoge acknowledged the difficulty of competing against Scheffler, remarking, “To be honest, I don’t know if I really felt like I had a chance to win at any point. Felt like I was trying to make as many birdies as I could. There were so many great players ahead of me starting the day, Scottie, Xander, those guys been playing so well all year.”
Scheffler’s performance has been nothing short of remarkable, with finishes in first or second place in eight of his last ten starts. According to statistician Justin Ray, Scheffler is the first player to win six Tour titles before July since Arnold Palmer achieved the feat in 1962.
The leaderboard was packed with talent, including Finau, Thomas, Cantlay, and Akshay Bhatia, who all tied for fifth place at 18 under par. Scheffler’s consistent excellence and ability to handle pressure have made him the standout player of the season, as he continues to build an extraordinary legacy on the PGA Tour.
