Scottie Scheffler to Miss First Event of 2025 PGA Season Following Hand Surgery
Scottie Scheffler, the reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year, will be unable to compete in the first event of the 2025 season due to a hand injury sustained on Christmas Day. The announcement was confirmed by his agent, Blake Smith, who revealed that the world’s top-ranked golfer required surgery to remove glass fragments from his right palm following a kitchen accident.
The incident occurred while Scheffler was preparing dinner for his family. A piece of broken glass punctured his hand, necessitating immediate medical attention. “On Christmas Day, while preparing dinner, Scottie sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from broken glass,” Smith explained to the PGA Tour’s communications team. “Small glass fragments remained in the palm, which required surgery. He has been told he will have to withdraw from The Sentry.”
The Sentry Tournament of Champions, scheduled for January 5-9 in Hawaii, marks the season opener for the PGA Tour. Scheffler is also uncertain for The American Express, which takes place later in January. “His next scheduled tournament is The American Express,” Smith added.
A Stellar 2024 for Scheffler
The 28-year-old Texan is coming off a historic 2024 season, during which he solidified his position as the world’s best golfer. Scheffler achieved nine victories worldwide, including his second Masters title in April, an Olympic gold medal, and triumphs in four signature events.
Despite battling a neck injury earlier in the year, he captured his second Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in March, further showcasing his resilience. Last month, Scheffler was named PGA Tour Player of the Year for the third consecutive time, a feat last accomplished by Tiger Woods. He edged out Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele for the prestigious Jack Nicklaus Award.
Scheffler also played a key role in Team USA’s dominant victory over the International team at the 2024 Presidents Cup in Montreal, finishing with a 3-2-0 record for the week.
Controversy at the PGA Championship
Scheffler’s remarkable year was briefly overshadowed by a legal incident at the PGA Championship in May. On the morning of May 17, he was arrested by a police officer outside Valhalla Golf Club after attempting to navigate heavy traffic caused by a fatal accident. Scheffler was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals.
However, Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell dismissed the charges after determining that the evidence did not support criminal intent. Scheffler maintained that the situation was a misunderstanding and opted not to pursue further legal action, stating his desire to focus on golf.
Viktor Hovland Suffers Freak Injury
Adding to the unusual turn of events, Viktor Hovland also announced an injury on December 27. The Norwegian golfer fractured the small toe on his right foot in what he described as an “exchange with a bed frame.”
Hovland shared the news on Instagram, humorously captioning an X-ray of his foot with “Bed frame 1-0 me.” Fellow golfer Collin Morikawa responded lightheartedly, saying, “I’m wrapping myself in some bubble wrap on the way to Hawaii.”
While Hovland has not confirmed whether he will miss The Sentry, his injury raises questions about his readiness for the upcoming tournament.
A Challenging Start to 2025
The unexpected injuries to two of golf’s biggest stars have cast a shadow over the beginning of the 2025 season. Fans and players alike will eagerly await updates on Scheffler and Hovland as the tour kicks off in Hawaii. Despite the setbacks, both golfers are expected to make strong comebacks as they aim to continue their dominance on the world stage.
