Robert MacIntyre made history on Sunday, becoming the second Scotsman to win Scotland’s National Open. He surged up the leaderboard on Saturday with a 7-under 63 and then posted a 3-under 67 on Sunday to beat Adam Scott by one stroke, joining Colin Montgomerie in the history books.
This marked MacIntyre’s second PGA Tour win of 2024, having also secured another national open title earlier in the year. In June, he triumphed at the RBC Canadian Open. The Scottish Open, however, proved to be a more dramatic victory. Despite the impressive feat of winning in Canada with his father as his caddie, MacIntyre’s performance this week was particularly noteworthy. He birdied the 18th hole to finish at 18-under, playing the final five holes in 4-under-par. MacIntyre holed a long birdie putt on the 14th hole and then made a remarkable eagle on the par-5 16th, which brought him to 17-under overall, tying him with Scott. He two-putted for par on the 17th and holed a 22-footer on the 18th to secure his place in Scottish Open history.
The Genesis Scottish Open had a $9 million purse, with MacIntyre taking home $1,620,000 and earning 500 FedEx Cup points. Scott earned $918,000 for his runner-up finish. The 2023 Scottish Open champion, Rory McIlroy, tied for fourth alongside Ludvig Åberg, who struggled on Sunday and posted a 3-over. Åberg entered the final round with a two-shot advantage over MacIntyre.
