Shane Lowry’s impressive streak of cuts made came to an end at the Wyndham Championship, marking his first missed cut in six months. Lowry, who hadn’t missed a cut since the American Express tournament in late January, struggled with his putting, failing to sink a putt longer than five feet. He posted a two-under 68 following an opening round of 70 in the weather-delayed event in Greensboro, North Carolina. At two-under par, Lowry is set to miss the four-under cut when the remaining 20 players still on the course complete their second rounds early today.
Despite the missed cut, Lowry still has a chance to secure his $2 million bonus for finishing tenth in the FedExCup standings at the end of the regular season. Fortunately for Lowry, potential threats Akshay Bhatia and Robert MacIntyre also missed the cut, ensuring his position in the Comcast Business Tour Top 10. Lowry will retain his tenth-place spot, provided that neither Brian Harman nor Christiaan Bezuidenhout, both tied 46th with Power on four-under, win the tournament.
The Comcast Business Tour Top 10 recognizes season-long performance, with the top 10 players in the FedExCup standings sharing a $40 million bonus. The top-ranked player will earn $8 million, while the tenth-place finisher will receive $1 million.
For those who made the cut, the battle is now on to finish in the top 70 in the FedExCup standings and qualify for next week’s first playoff event, the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis. Seamus Power, who entered the week ranked 69th, managed to follow a delayed first-round 66 with a 70. However, he’s projected to fall to 70th and will need a solid performance over the final 36 holes to avoid missing the playoffs and being forced to compete in the Fall Season events.
Following the washout of Thursday’s first round due to Tropical Storm Debby, Power faces a marathon Sunday as officials hope to complete the remaining 36 holes today. The third round is scheduled to start at 12:50 pm Irish time, with players teeing off in groups of three from split tees. The Tour estimates that the final round must start by 8:10 pm Irish time if there’s any chance of completing all 72 holes today.
Veteran golfer Matt Kuchar, 46, also has a long day ahead. Kuchar shot a second consecutive six-under 64 to take the lead by one stroke over Chad Ramey, Max Greyserman, and Cameron Young at 12-under par. Kuchar is seeking a victory that would make him the first player to compete in all 17 editions of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. He entered the week ranked 111th in the season-long standings but needs a win to extend his streak to 18.
“I really don’t think much about it,” Kuchar said of the points projections and what he needs to do. “I try to play well every week. Certainly, not work out, glad it’s worked out this week. I was telling somebody yesterday I don’t focus on my point positioning, where I stand. I just don’t know how that helps you to play good golf.”
Kuchar is among many players who need a strong showing on Sunday. Victor Perez, projected to remain 71st after a 69 left him tied for 26th on five-under, must gain two shots and finish tied 15th or better to advance. Chad Ramey, currently 106th, needs to win outright to move forward.
As for Power, he will need to make a significant move up the leaderboard on the final day to avoid any last-minute drama and secure his place in the FedExCup Playoffs.
