U.S. Open finalist Jannik Sinner will skip the Davis Cup Finals group stage in Bologna next week to rest after his final match against Taylor Fritz, Italy’s captain Filippo Volandri announced on Saturday.
Volandri stated, “Given Jannik’s commitment to the later stages of the competition and after consulting with the federation and his team, we decided it’s best to give him a full recovery period.”
Sinner, who was cleared of doping allegations just before the U.S. Open, defeated Jack Draper in the semifinals to reach his first Grand Slam final.
Defending champions Italy will feature Matteo Berrettini, Matteo Arnaldi, Flavio Cobolli, Andrea Vavassori, and Simone Bolelli, while Olympic bronze medalist Lorenzo Musetti will also be absent to recover.
Last year, Sinner played a crucial role in Italy’s Davis Cup victory, defeating Novak Djokovic in both singles and doubles during the semifinals against Serbia, and securing the decisive point against Australia by beating Alex de Minaur.
Italy’s Davis Cup group stage begins with a match against Brazil on Wednesday, followed by games against Belgium and the Netherlands. Group stages will also be held in Valencia, Zhuhai, and Manchester, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the knockout rounds in Malaga, Spain, from November 19-24.
Sinner faced criticism for missing last year’s group phase but quickly redeemed himself by leading Italy to victory and winning his first Grand Slam at the Australian Open in January.
