The top three seeds of the 2024 LIV Golf Team Championship have secured their spots in the semifinals, while the remaining 10 teams will battle it out in the quarterfinals following a draft held on Thursday at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas.
With a $50 million prize purse at stake, the event will take place from Friday through Sunday in the Dallas area. Top-seeded Crushers GC, the defending team champions, alongside second-seeded Legion XIII—featuring individual champion Jon Rahm—and the all-Australian Ripper GC, will join the five winning teams from Friday’s quarterfinals in head-to-head matches on Saturday. The four victorious teams from Saturday will advance to a final 18-hole stroke play on Sunday.
Fourth-seeded Smash GC, captained by Brooks Koepka, had the first pick in the draft and chose to face 13th-seeded Iron Heads GC. Koepka’s strategy was simple: “Just went from the bottom up,” he said. “I think that’s the way we did it. I just felt like we’ve got a good chance. We’ll see what happens.”
Following the draft, the teams revealed their lineups for the quarterfinal matches, which consist of two singles and one foursome. Each match is worth one point. While this is the first time in the event’s history that captains are not required to play singles, Koepka will still face off against Iron Heads captain Kevin Na, just as Na expected.
“I thought about throwing a curveball in there, but I talked to the guys, and everybody actually wanted to play singles,” Na said. “I know Brooks is a tough opponent—he’s a five-time major champion—but I’ve taken down some people in match play before.”
Other captains, like Phil Mickelson of the HyFlyers, chose to participate in the foursome. Mickelson will team up with Brendan Steele against Torque GC, while his teammates Andy Ogletree and Cameron Tringale will play singles. “Andy Ogletree won the ’21 Amateur. He’s a tough match-play competitor. Cam Tringale won all his matches last year,” Mickelson said. “As for me and Steeley, we’re really annoying to play against—together, it’s a whole new level.”
