Fifteen-year-old Charlie Woods, son of golf legend Tiger Woods, experienced a challenging round at the local qualifying for the U.S. Open, held at The Legacy Golf & Tennis Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Despite his efforts, Charlie shot a 9-over 81, making it clear that he’ll have to wait for his chance to compete in the prestigious national championship, set to take place at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina from June 13-16.
Charlie’s round began with a bogey on the opening hole, followed by a double on the par-5 second. Although he managed a couple of pars and a birdie on the front nine, a double on the par-4 sixth contributed to a 4-over 40 at the turn. The back nine presented its own challenges, with another double and three bogeys offset by five pars, resulting in a 41.
In this highly competitive field, only the top-five finishers and two alternates will advance from the local qualifying round. Despite not making the cut, Charlie’s participation in events like the PGA Tour’s Cognizant Classic pre-qualifier earlier this year, where he shot 86, showcases his determination to test his skills at higher levels of competition. Recently, he was spotted alongside his father on the range at the Masters, demonstrating his commitment to refining his game.
Charlie’s involvement in his high school’s state championship-winning golf team last fall, for which he received his championship rings last month, highlights his passion and dedication to the sport. Looking ahead, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him attempt to qualify for prestigious events like the U.S. Junior Amateur at Oakland Hills or the U.S. Amateur at Hazeltine later this summer, following in his father’s footsteps, who won both events three times. While the road to success may have its obstacles, Charlie’s journey in the world of golf is just beginning.
