Heading into day three of the Presidents Cup, Team USA and Team International were tied at 5-5, with the morning four-balls set to determine who would take the lead into the afternoon foursomes.
Team USA claimed early victories on Saturday, winning two matches 2&1 and 3&2. However, Si Woo Kim and Tom Kim delivered a strong 4&3 win over Keegan Bradley and Wyndham Clark. Si Woo’s clutch putt evoked memories of Tiger Woods’ iconic moment. Team USA had won the first two holes and regained momentum with a birdie on the fourth, bringing the match to 1-down. Yet, with wins at the seventh and eighth, the Kim duo went 3-up.
Despite losing the ninth hole, a win on the 10th put the International Team firmly in control. A series of ties followed, setting up Si Woo Kim for a chance to clinch victory on the par-4 15th. With the other players making par, Kim had the opportunity to secure the International Team’s first point of the morning session. Confident in his stroke, Si Woo walked towards the hole, removing his cap, as the ball rolled directly into the center, reminiscent of Tiger Woods’ famous walk-off putt against Abraham Ancer at the 2019 Presidents Cup in Royal Melbourne.
As the afternoon foursomes approached, the International Team trailed 8-6. Captain Mike Weir made the decision not to change the lineup from the morning four-balls, a move that drew some criticism. Still, given their dominant 5-0 foursomes win on Friday, the International side looked to narrow the gap as they headed into Sunday’s singles matches.
