Tiger Woods recently made a return to golf at the 2023 Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas. However, his performance at The Open Championship, where he missed the cut, has sparked renewed debate about his future in the sport. Among those urging him to retire is Fox Sports commentator Skip Bayless, who believes it’s time for Woods to call it a career.
“Tiger Woods should quit trying to play in golf’s major championships before he embarrasses himself even worse than he already has,” Bayless stated. While Bayless admires Woods and wishes to see him succeed again, he has lost faith that Woods will ever win another major. “He’s Tiger Freakin Woods,” Bayless acknowledged, but he, like many others, feels the magic of Woods’ early career is gone.
This sentiment is echoed by golf legend Colin Montgomerie, who also called for Woods’ retirement after Woods missed the cut at the U.S. Open. “Aren’t we there? I’d have thought we were past there,” Montgomerie commented. “There is a time for all sportsmen to say goodbye, but it’s very difficult to tell Tiger it’s time to go. Obviously, he still feels he can win. We are more realistic.”
Despite these calls for retirement, Woods remains defiant. He emphasized his determination to continue playing, citing his status as a past champion which grants him exemption until he’s 60. “As a past champion, I’m exempt until I’m 60,” Woods remarked. “Colin’s not. He’s not a past champion, so he’s not exempt. So he doesn’t get the opportunity to make that decision. I do. … When I get to his age, I get to still make that decision, where he doesn’t. I’ll play as long as I can play, and I feel like I can still win the event.”
It is clear that Tiger Woods intends to continue his career as long as he believes he can compete at the highest level, regardless of the opinions of others.
