Tannehill, who is set to hit free agency after five seasons with the Tennessee Titans, could find himself in the mix for the Steelers’ quarterback competition. This speculation comes hot on the heels of the Steelers’ recent hiring of Arthur Smith as offensive coordinator. Smith, who previously served as Tannehill’s offensive coordinator in Tennessee, brings a familiarity that could favor Tannehill’s potential integration into the Steelers’ system.

Head coach Mike Tomlin made it clear during his end-of-season press conference in January that he’s seeking competition for Pickett in the upcoming season. Pickett, who dealt with an ankle injury towards the end of the previous season, found himself on the sidelines during the playoffs despite being healthy, as Mason Rudolph took over the reins.

With Rudolph also heading into free agency, Tomlin is keen on securing a solid backup option before heading into training camp. Pickett, entering the third year of his rookie contract, has shown promise but has yet to fully establish himself as the definitive starter, prompting the Steelers to explore their options.

In his rookie season, Pickett displayed flashes of potential, starting in 13 games and throwing for seven touchdowns but also facing challenges with interceptions. The Steelers’ offensive struggles were evident in their rankings, as they finished 25th in total and passing offense and 28th in points scored in the 2023 season.

Meanwhile, Tannehill brings a wealth of experience and productivity from his time with the Titans. Over 63 games, he amassed 90 touchdowns and 40 interceptions, showcasing a completion rate of 66.6%. However, Tennessee’s decision to draft Will Levis last year signaled a potential shift towards a new era, leaving Tannehill’s future uncertain.
