Taylor Swift has officially surpassed Rihanna to become the world’s richest female musician, according to Forbes. Just one year after being inducted into the billionaire club, Swift’s estimated net worth has soared to an impressive $1.6 billion, marking a $500 million increase since October 2023. This latest milestone pushes her past Rihanna, who currently holds an estimated net worth of $1.4 billion.
The significant boost in Swift’s fortune is largely attributed to her record-breaking Eras Tour, which kicked off in March 2023 and will conclude in December after a monumental 149 shows. The tour’s success has not only set new standards for live performances but also played a crucial role in elevating Swift’s financial standing. As Forbes highlights, she is the first musician to achieve billionaire status primarily through her music and performances.
Of her $1.6 billion net worth, Swift has amassed nearly $600 million from royalties and touring alone. Additionally, her music catalog is valued at around $600 million, while her real estate portfolio is worth an estimated $125 million.
In terms of other notable musicians, Beyoncé follows as the next highest-ranking female musician on Forbes’ list, with a net worth of $760 million. Meanwhile, Beyoncé’s husband, Jay-Z, stands as the wealthiest musician overall, with a staggering $2.5 billion fortune. Other high-profile billionaires in the entertainment industry include filmmaker Tyler Perry ($1.4 billion), reality star Kim Kardashian ($1.7 billion), and media mogul Oprah Winfrey, who tops the list with a net worth of $2.8 billion.
Swift’s ascent into billionaire status coincides with her ongoing project of re-recording her early albums. This effort began after Scooter Braun’s company, Ithaca Holdings LLC, acquired her former label, Big Machine Label Group, which included the masters of her first six albums. The acquisition deeply upset Swift, who publicly expressed her dissatisfaction, saying she felt “sad and grossed out” by the deal.
Braun has since admitted some regret over how the situation unfolded, telling Variety in 2021, “It makes me sad that Taylor had that reaction to the deal. She and I only met briefly a few times, and all our interactions were friendly. I find her to be incredibly talented and wish her nothing but the best.”
To date, Swift has released four of her planned six re-recorded albums, and the success of these “Taylor’s Versions” has been remarkable. According to Billboard, her updated versions are outperforming the originals on streaming platforms.
Swift’s peers in the music industry also support her re-recording journey. One of her biggest advocates is Kelly Clarkson, who in 2019 suggested that Swift re-record her old albums following the news of Braun’s acquisition. Reflecting on Swift’s success, Clarkson told E! News in November 2023, “She’s a very smart businesswoman. It’s amazing how she found a loophole and took control of her music again.”
Clarkson also praised Swift’s influence and the significance of her achievements, stating, “She literally is the best-selling artist of all time now.”
