Rory McIlroy’s decision to remain loyal to the PGA Tour has proven beneficial, despite the lucrative deals offered by the LIV Golf series. This year, McIlroy has earned a substantial amount, only surpassed by two LIV Golf players. Although the 35-year-old has not secured any major titles this year, his prize money earnings have been impressive.
McIlroy, who has consistently refused to join the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf tour since its inception in 2022, has seen fellow golfers like Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, and Bryson DeChambeau move to the breakaway tour with highly lucrative contracts. Despite this, McIlroy remains among the highest-paid golfers.
According to PGA data, McIlroy has earned over £8 million ($10.35 million) in prize money this year. Of the LIV Golf players, only Joaquin Niemann and Sergio Garcia have earned more, with Niemann at £9.8 million ($12.6 million) and Garcia at £8.34 million ($10.77 million). With only four events left in the LIV Golf season, McIlroy could potentially close the gap in the prize money rankings.
McIlroy faced challenges at The Open Championship recently, echoing his disappointment from the US Open weeks earlier. His quest for another major championship victory continues into a second decade, as his last major win was in 2014. Despite these setbacks, McIlroy remains optimistic about his future in the sport.
Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy noted the abundance of opportunities beyond the majors. “We play like 25 events a year,” he said, emphasizing that there is still much to strive for. McIlroy is looking forward to the Olympics and aims to perform well there. Additionally, he remains in contention for top spots on the money list on both sides of the Atlantic, providing plenty of motivation for the remainder of the year.
