The Green Bay Packers faced a surprising upset at the hands of the New York Giants, losing 24-22 in a last-second field goal in a game marked by chaos and bizarre moments. Despite favorable outcomes for them in the NFC North and Wild Card race earlier in the week, the Packers couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity.
Right from the start, the game was marred by referee mistakes, with numerous overturned calls and questionable penalties on both teams. The teams themselves contributed to the chaos with muffed punts and Giants’ running back Saquon Barkley’s peculiar trip and fumble, leading to a late go-ahead touchdown for the Packers.
Quarterback Jordan Love had a rough outing, committing turnovers and inaccurate passes for three quarters. It wasn’t until the final 15 minutes that he resembled the quarterback who had previously led the team to three consecutive wins. Undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito arguably outplayed Love, causing problems for the Packers’ defense with his running ability.
The Packers’ defense also struggled, with a nonexistent pass rush failing to sack DeVito, who had been sacked at least five times in each of the last four games. DeVito capitalized on the lack of pressure, finishing with 10 carries for 71 yards and becoming the game’s leading rusher.
Despite Love’s late-game touchdown, the Packers couldn’t convert a crucial two-point conversion. The Giants seized the opportunity, marching down the field and setting up Randy Bullock for a game-winning 37-yard field goal.
The loss leaves the Packers in the NFC’s #7 seed for the playoffs, but it’s a demoralizing setback for a team that entered the game as substantial favorites. The Packers will regroup at home before facing the NFC South-leading Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday after a short week.
