Those anticipating a Ryder Cup captaincy face-off between Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are set to be let down. Woods, who had been in talks for the 2025 American captaincy, ultimately declined due to time constraints. Now, he is the leading candidate for the 2027 captaincy, with hopes that his involvement in the PGA Tour-LIV Golf negotiations will be concluded by then.
On the European side, the captaincy is still up in the air. Given that the 2027 Ryder Cup will be held at Adare Manor in Ireland, and considering Adare’s owner, J. P. McManus, has a personal relationship with McIlroy, there was speculation that Europe might counter Woods’ star power by appointing McIlroy as a player-captain, similar to Woods’ role at the 2019 Presidents Cup. However, McIlroy quashed these hopes following a strong first round at the Genesis Scottish Open.
McIlroy, in his first appearance since a disappointing finish at the U.S. Open, was asked about Keegan Bradley’s appointment as the U.S. Ryder Cup captain. “I think disbelief,” McIlroy said in North Berwick, Scotland. “I think Keegan was probably in disbelief at some point too, but certainly an interesting pick. The youngest captain since Arnold Palmer, who was a playing captain at 34. But he knows Bethpage very well. He went to university in the area and is obviously very passionate about the Ryder Cup.”
Bradley, introduced as captain this week in New York, expressed his wish to qualify as a player only through automatic selection. McIlroy highlighted the challenges of the captain’s role, citing them as the reason he declined a player-captain role for 2027.
“There’s too much work that goes into it,” McIlroy explained. “I’ve seen what Luke [Donald] went through preparing for Rome. There’s no way you can be as good a captain as you need to be and be playing as well. It’s been mentioned, and I’ve just said, ‘No way.’ If you want to be the best captain you can be, you can’t play. And if you want to be the best player you can be, you can’t captain. It’s one or the other. Especially with how big the Ryder Cup has become and how many things you have to do in the lead-up to the event, the week of the event.”
At 35, McIlroy has an impressive Ryder Cup record, having participated in seven Ryder Cups and achieving a 16-13-4 record in 33 matches.
