Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are set to play significant roles in the PGA Tour’s upcoming negotiations with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF) regarding their framework agreement. This marks a year since the PGA Tour’s commissioner, Jay Monahan, announced a deal with PIF aimed at resolving the conflict with LIV Golf, although a final agreement has yet to be reached.
In recognition of the one-year anniversary of this initial announcement, representatives from both sides will meet in New York City this Friday, as reported by the Sports Business Journal. Tiger Woods, who has 82 PGA Tour victories, will attend in person, while Rory McIlroy will participate via video call due to his engagement in the Memorial Tournament.
McIlroy’s involvement comes shortly after his attempt to rejoin the PGA Tour’s policy board was declined. He had previously resigned from his player director role in November, citing off-course politics. Despite his recent interest in returning, his fellow players, including Woods, reportedly turned down his request.
Reports from Golf Digest suggest that differing opinions on the PGA Tour’s strategy concerning LIV Golf have strained the relationship between Woods and McIlroy. However, McIlroy downplayed any tension, stating that friends can have disagreements without it affecting their relationship. He mentioned that they had a productive 45-minute discussion recently and reiterated that their differing visions for the future of golf should not strain their friendship.
Despite not being on the board, McIlroy remains involved in the discussions with PIF. He has already had extensive communications with the negotiation team and reviewed detailed documents about the future of the PGA Tour. While he doesn’t have a formal vote, he continues to play an advisory role in the ongoing negotiations.
As McIlroy aims for his second PGA Tour title in a month at Muirfield Village, he remains committed to contributing to the future direction of professional golf.
