Tiger Woods struggled significantly at the PGA Championship this week, failing to make the cut after shooting 7 over par across the first two rounds. The legendary golfer has a clear understanding of why he struggled.
Woods attributed his poor performance to a lack of tournament play, admitting on Friday that he wants to compete more frequently but his health issues have limited his ability to do so.
“I just need to play more,” Woods said, according to Dylan Dethier of Golf.com. “Unfortunately, I just haven’t played a whole lot of tournaments — and there aren’t a lot of tournaments on my schedule, either. Hopefully everything will somehow come together in my practice sessions at home and be ready for Pinehurst.”
The PGA Championship marked only the sixth tournament Woods has participated in since the beginning of 2023. Compounding the difficulty, he tends to compete in the toughest events, with three of those six tournaments being majors.
Woods managed to make the cut at the Masters last month, but his performance deteriorated over the final two days. His play at Valhalla on Thursday and Friday showed no improvement.
At 48 years old, Woods needs more tournament play to achieve consistent performance. However, his body currently doesn’t seem capable of handling a more rigorous schedule.
