Tiger Woods has deviated from his proposed plan for the 2024 season, signaling a potential shift in his schedule.
The golf icon opted out of the Valspar Championship, suggesting that his next appearance on the course might not be until the Masters in mid-April. Unless Woods surprises everyone by participating in the Houston Open at the end of the month, a departure from his usual routine, it seems increasingly probable that the 48-year-old will forego all competitions in March to focus on preparing for the Masters.
This decision marks a departure from Woods’ initial plan for the season. In December 2023, he had announced his intention to play in one tournament every month to regain his form following a serious leg injury from a car crash in 2021. “Once a month seems reasonable,” Woods had remarked to the Golf Channel.
He explained his strategy, saying, “It gives me a couple of weeks to recover and a week to tune up. Maybe I can get into the rhythm.” Initially, Woods appeared to be on track, participating in The Genesis Invitational in February.
However, his comeback was short-lived as he had to withdraw from the event during the second round due to what he described as the flu. “I would like to confirm that I had to withdraw from @thegenesisinv due to illness, which we now know is influenza,” he shared on social media.
“I am resting and feeling better. Good luck to the players this weekend. I’m disappointed to not be there and want to thank @GenesisUSA and all the fans for the support.”
Given Woods’ numerous injury concerns, many golf enthusiasts have been speculating about his future on the tour. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan provided some insight into the legendary golfer’s situation and what lies ahead for him this year.
“I think you all know Tiger well enough to know that he wants to earn his way into every competition. That’s his makeup,” Monahan remarked when asked if there would be a special category for past champions to participate. “But I think as you go forward, as you evolve as an organization, you think about how do you serve and satisfy a rabid fan base?
“Those discussions, more broadly, would likely be held at the policy board meeting. And I’m sure we would have that discussion. But he’d be the hardest one to convince.”
