Tiger Woods breaks his silence on Ryder Cup captaincy snub

Posted on July 9, 2024

Tiger Woods has disclosed that he declined the opportunity to captain Team USA in the 2025 Ryder Cup, citing time constraints as the reason. However, the 15-time major winner expressed his openness to taking on the role in the future. Keegan Bradley was recently announced as the US captain for the 2025 match, which will be held in New York.

In a statement, Woods explained, “With my new responsibilities to the Tour and time commitments involved, I felt like I would not be able to commit the time to Team USA and the players required as a captain. That does not mean I wouldn’t want to captain a team in the future. If and when I feel it is the right time, I will put my hat in the ring for this committee to decide.”

Bradley, considered a surprising choice for the captaincy, was introduced on Tuesday. The world No. 19 shared that he has informed Woods that he is welcome to be as involved as he wishes in next year’s match. However, Bradley has yet to discuss the possibility of Woods serving as a vice captain as Team USA aims for redemption following their heavy defeat in Rome last year.

Woods has a rich history with the Ryder Cup, having participated in eight tournaments since his debut in 1997. His last appearance as a player was in 2018. The 48-year-old also served as a vice captain at Hazeltine in 2016. Reports indicate that Woods had discussions with the PGA of America about succeeding Zach Johnson as captain next September.
