Golf legend Tiger Woods recently addressed the media ahead of the Hero World Challenge, revealing his decision to participate solely as a host due to plantar fasciitis. The 46-year-old expressed his physical limitations, stating, “That’s all I can do; I like playing, I like competing, but unfortunately, I just can’t walk.”
Woods initially didn’t anticipate playing in three majors this year but managed to squeeze in two more, marking a positive turn in his golfing journey. However, the emergence of plantar fasciitis in his right foot forced him to withdraw from the Hero World Challenge, a tournament benefiting his Tiger Woods Foundation.
Sharing the news on social media, Woods explained, “I’ve developed plantar fasciitis in my right foot, which is making it difficult to walk.” He decided to focus on hosting duties for the weekend, following advice from his medical team.
During the discussion, Woods also touched on the PGA Tour’s future in light of the formation of LIV Golf and expressed skepticism about their coexistence due to LIV CEO Greg Norman’s apparent animosity towards the Tour. Woods suggested that for any collaboration to occur, Norman might need to step aside.
Despite facing physical challenges, Woods remains committed to upcoming events, including an appearance on TNT’s The Match and participation in the PNC Championship. Reflecting on his eventful 2022, Woods was honored with induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame in March, a ceremony highlighted by a touching speech from his 14-year-old daughter, Sam. Sam commended her father’s resilience, referencing his recovery from a serious automobile crash as one of his “ultimate lows” and expressing gratitude that he stands on his own two feet today.
