Tiger Woods Extends Olive Branch to Bryson DeChambeau Amid PGA Tour and LIV Golf Rift
Tiger Woods and Bryson DeChambeau, once close allies on the golf course, have had a strained relationship since DeChambeau’s controversial move to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf. Woods, a staunch supporter of the PGA Tour, had reportedly distanced himself from DeChambeau following the switch. The tension between the two was further exacerbated by allegations of slow play by DeChambeau at the 2022 Masters, which affected Woods and other players.
Their frosty relationship seemed evident when Woods reportedly did not respond to a birthday greeting from DeChambeau, also known as ‘The Scientist.’ However, the chill appears to be thawing as Woods recently congratulated DeChambeau on his US Open victory, marking their first communication in a significant period. This gesture was reported by Sports Illustrated’s Bob Harig.
DeChambeau acknowledged the communication before the Open Championship, stating, “It is the first communication [for a while]. But I’ll say he’s a competitor and I have a lot of respect for him.” He reflected on the message, adding, “I’m sure that winning two US Opens definitely helped, I guess, for him coming up and saying congrats. I don’t know what his position is, but it was very thoughtful, and I was appreciative of it.”
In addition to Woods, Rory McIlroy, who had previously left Pinehurst without congratulating DeChambeau following a late collapse that handed the American the title, also extended his congratulations. DeChambeau noted their improved relations, stating, “I said hello to him [McIlroy] and we talked. He said congratulations, so everything’s great there. He’s a fierce competitor.”
Despite the budding goodwill, all three golf stars—Woods, McIlroy, and DeChambeau—faced challenges at The Open. Woods struggled with an eight-over-par 79, McIlroy managed a 78, and DeChambeau hit a 76, despite a remarkable 55ft eagle putt on the 16th. None of the three seemed likely to make the cut after their disastrous opening rounds at Troon.
