Tiger Woods has joined the chorus of dissent against Rory McIlroy’s stance on welcoming LIV Golf players back to the PGA Tour without facing repercussions.
Stars like Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, and Jon Rahm were barred from the PGA Tour after opting to join LIV Golf. However, the feud between the two tours seems to be nearing its end after almost two years.
Last June, the PGA Tour announced negotiations with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF) to unify professional golf worldwide. As part of this deal, players who switched to LIV Golf are expected to regain their PGA Tour playing rights.
McIlroy, who had been vocal against the breakaway league, softened his stance in recent months, advocating for the return of players without punishment. However, his friend and business partner, Tiger Woods, reportedly opposes this idea, according to Golf Digest.
The path for LIV players to return to the PGA Tour remains uncertain, with reports suggesting it’s a low priority in negotiations. The PGA Tour recently announced an investment agreement with Strategic Sports Group (SSG), injecting £2.4 billion ($3bn) into PGA Tour Enterprises.
While talks with the Saudi fund continue, progress appears slower than anticipated. Departing DP World Tour CEO Keith Pelley has delayed his departure to facilitate negotiations, with the upcoming Masters speculated as a realistic target for finalizing a peace agreement.
