Tiger Woods’ former caddie, Steve Williams, amassed a significant net worth while working with the golf legend, highlighting the financial rewards available in the sport. Williams, a New Zealand native, served as Woods’ caddie from 1999 to 2011, accumulating a fortune of approximately £15.7 million ($20 million) during this period of remarkable success alongside the 15-time major winner.
Woods, the PGA Tour’s most successful player with 82 titles to his name, has an impressive career earnings total of £94.2 million ($120 million). Williams, benefiting from both a salary and a percentage of Woods’ winnings, became one of the highest-paid sports figures in his country.
During their partnership, Woods secured 64 victories on the PGA Tour and won 13 of his 15 majors. He also earned nine Tour Player of the Year awards and held the World No. 1 ranking for 281 weeks between June 2005 and October 2010. Williams’ association with other top golfers, including Adam Scott and Jason Day, further cemented his reputation in the sport.
In 2011, Williams sought Woods’ permission to caddie for Adam Scott at the US Open, after Woods withdrew due to injury. Although Woods initially agreed, he later changed his mind, leading to tensions in their relationship. Williams remained committed to his promise to Scott and was ultimately dismissed by Woods following the tournament.
Reflecting on the incident, Williams told CBS that he was surprised by Woods’ decision to fire him, noting that he had not anticipated losing his job over his commitment to Scott. Despite the fallout, Williams continued his career, caddying for Scott until 2017 and briefly returning to work with him between 2022 and 2023, as well as working with Jason Day in 2019.
