Tiger Woods’ son Charlie Woods just misses out in PGA Tour pre-qualifier

Fifteen-year-old Charlie Woods, son of golf legend Tiger Woods, saw his aspirations of competing in the PGA Tour’s Cognizant Classic next week dashed as he failed to progress from a pre-qualifying event held in Hobe Sound, Florida. The setback occurred on Thursday at Lost Lake Golf Club, one of four designated pre-qualifying venues.

Despite favorable playing conditions with preferred lies and the allowance of carts, Woods struggled on the course, ultimately carding a disappointing 16-over-par 86. His round got off to a shaky start, registering 4 over par within the initial five holes. However, it was the seventh hole that proved catastrophic, as he endured a nightmarish 12 strokes on the par-4.

Nevertheless, Woods exhibited resilience, stringing together six consecutive pars following the setback. Yet, his momentum faltered with a double-bogey at the par-3 14th hole, followed by two successive bogeys. He concluded his round with a pair of pars, showcasing composure despite the challenges faced.

Throughout the round, Woods was paired with Olin Browne Jr., the son of three-time PGA Tour victor Olin Browne, who posted a commendable 2-over-par 72.

In the pre-qualifying format, the top five scores, along with ties, from each site progress to Monday’s qualifier. From there, the top four performers advance to the main event, the Cognizant Classic, boasting a significant $9 million purse, with the champion claiming a substantial $1.62 million prize.
