The anticipation surrounding the 2024 edition of The Players Championship, set to commence on March 14 at the renowned TPC Sawgrass, has been tempered by the absence of Tiger Woods from the field of 144 players contending for the impressive $25 million purse.
The PGA Tour unveiled the complete lineup for its premier event on March 8, with Woods’ notable omission sparking speculation among golf enthusiasts that the 15-time major champion may be reserving his return to competitive play for The Masters.
In a departure from his initial vision of a more frequent playing schedule, Woods had outlined a plan to compete roughly once a month. However, his aspirations were dampened when he was compelled to withdraw from the Hero World Challenge in December due to illness, after completing only 24 holes.
Previously, there was anticipation that The Players Championship would serve as Woods’ final preparatory event ahead of the season’s opening major. Yet, with the forthcoming PGA Tour itinerary now unfolding, indications suggest that Woods may not grace the competitive scene again until the iconic Augusta National Golf Club hosts The Masters.
