Jim Furyk Hints at Possible Role for Tiger Woods in the Presidents Cup
Jim Furyk, the captain of the United States Presidents Cup team, has left the possibility open for Tiger Woods to play a role in the upcoming competition. Furyk, who will lead the U.S. team in its defense against Mike Weir’s International side at Royal Montreal Golf Club in Canada from September 26-29, is considering reaching out to Woods to discuss a potential role.
Furyk, 54, has a history with team captaincy, having led the U.S. Ryder Cup team in 2018, although that campaign ended in a 17.5-10.5 defeat to Europe. Woods, 48, has been an influential figure in team strategy for both the U.S. Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup teams in recent years. Despite turning down the opportunity to captain the 2025 Ryder Cup team due to his commitments with the PGA Tour, PIF, and TGL, Woods may still have a role to play in this year’s Presidents Cup.
In an interview with Golfweek, Furyk confirmed that he intends to contact Woods soon. “I’ll reach out to Tiger,” Furyk said. “We all expected him to be named Ryder Cup captain, and when that didn’t happen, I know he’s been very busy with the PGA Tour and his responsibilities on our board, which is a lot of work right now. But I’ll touch base with him. He has great strategies and insights on pairings, but I haven’t reached out yet.”
Furyk currently has four assistant captains—Stewart Cink, Justin Leonard, Kevin Kisner, and Keegan Bradley—and is allowed one more. While he hasn’t officially announced who will fill that final spot, Furyk hinted that he has a strong idea of who it will be, leaving open the possibility that Woods could be involved.
The U.S. team already has six players who have automatically qualified: Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay, and Sahith Theegala. Furyk will announce his six captain’s picks on Sunday, and when asked if Bradley, despite being an assistant, could be one of those picks after his recent BMW Championship win, Furyk remained tight-lipped, saying, “That’s a road we’ll cross when I get there. We’ll wait and see who the picks are. I’ve got a plan, but I don’t want to discuss it in detail yet.”
The United States is seeking its 10th consecutive Presidents Cup victory, which would mark their 13th win since the competition began in 1994. The International team has won only once, in 1998, and tied the match in 2003.
