Former PGA Tour star Brandel Chamblee has suggested that Rory McIlroy’s recent victory at the Zurich Classic alongside Shane Lowry should be categorized separately from his other individual PGA Tour titles. McIlroy secured his 25th PGA Tour victory by teaming up with Lowry in a dramatic playoff at TPC Louisiana, moving past golf greats like Dustin Johnson and Gary Player on the all-time winners list.
Chamblee took to X, the Golf Channel, to express his view that team wins should be distinguished from individual wins. He argued that most golf fans assume “individual” wins when considering a player’s total tour victories. Chamblee also brought up Tiger Woods, who shares the record for the most PGA Tour wins with Sam Snead. Chamblee pointed out that Snead’s record includes five team victories, whereas Woods has none, making Woods the true leader in terms of individual wins.
Despite Chamblee’s perspective, McIlroy is likely to regard his Zurich Classic victory as significant as his other 24 individual wins. The win marked McIlroy’s first team title and his first PGA Tour victory in nine months on American soil.
Reflecting on the victory, McIlroy emphasized the special aspect of winning alongside a close friend like Lowry, whom he has known for over 20 years. Lowry also expressed his delight at the win, highlighting the joy of playing alongside McIlroy and their shared desire to kickstart their summer season with a strong performance.
McIlroy and Lowry’s victory at the Zurich Classic adds another chapter to their successful partnership, following their representation of Ireland as teammates at the 2021 Olympics. With a strong bond and mutual respect, McIlroy and Lowry continue to shine both individually and as a team on the PGA Tour.
