Tom Kim, one of the rising stars on the PGA Tour, is facing scrutiny and a potential fine after a reported outburst in the locker room at the Genesis Championship in Korea. The South Korean golfer, aged 22, reportedly damaged property at the prestigious Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea after narrowly missing out on a £525,000 top prize in a high-stakes playoff.
The incident unfolded after a tense final round on Sunday, where Kim finished tied with fellow South Korean An Byeong-hun at 17-under par, leading to a sudden-death playoff on the 18th hole. The stakes were high as the two players competed for a substantial cash prize, but ultimately, Byeong-hun clinched victory with a birdie, while Kim had a bogey on the hole. Frustrated with the outcome, Kim reportedly returned to the locker room and, in an apparent show of anger, slammed his locker door, causing damage to the door’s frame.
When the incident came to light on Monday, Kim addressed the situation through an interview with Korean news outlet Sports Donga, expressing remorse. He accepted responsibility and said he would “reflect on his actions.” Despite his apology, the Korea Professional Golfers’ Association (KPGA) has announced it is considering disciplinary measures. According to JoongAng Daily, the KPGA plans to cover the immediate repair costs but intends to bill Kim for the damages later. They are also reportedly considering convening a disciplinary committee to address the incident and assess any further actions.
This is not the first time Kim’s emotions have led to controversy. In August, he faced criticism after another emotional outburst on the course. Frustrated by a missed putt during the final round of the FedEx St Jude Championship, Kim slammed his club into the green, leaving a noticeable divot near the cup. This incident led to widespread backlash from fans on social media, with many calling for the PGA Tour to reprimand him for breaching golfing etiquette.
Kim has also found himself in disputes with other high-profile golfers. During the 2024 Presidents Cup, he and his playing partner, Im Sung-jae, walked away from their hole while World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler was lining up a putt, which was perceived by some as a sign of disrespect. Later in the tournament, Kim had a confrontation with American golfer Wyndham Clark, whom he accused of swearing at him. Clark, however, clarified that his words were directed toward motivating his teammates rather than at Kim personally.
Despite these controversies, Kim’s career on the PGA Tour has been marked by impressive accomplishments. Since joining in 2021, he has won three tournaments and established himself as one of South Korea’s most promising young golfers. His early success includes becoming the second-youngest player, after Tiger Woods, to achieve two PGA Tour wins before turning 21. In 2023, Kim showcased his skill on an international stage, finishing tied for second at The Open Championship alongside golf heavyweights Jason Day, Jon Rahm, and Sepp Straka, although eventual champion Brian Harman maintained a comfortable six-stroke lead.
Kim’s fiery temperament on the course has proven both a strength and a potential liability. As he continues to rise in the ranks, the young golfer may face increasing scrutiny from governing bodies like the KPGA and PGA Tour if similar incidents continue to arise. The KPGA’s disciplinary committee may ultimately decide Kim’s fate regarding this latest locker room incident, as the organization looks to uphold standards of sportsmanship and decorum in golf.
