South Korean golfer Tom Kim received an official warning from the KPGA following an incident at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea locker room during the Genesis Championship last month. The 22-year-old PGA Tour player lost a nail-biting playoff to fellow South Korean An Byeong-hun, with both finishing at 17-under-par after 72 holes. Shortly after, an image of a damaged locker circulated on social media, sparking controversy as reports claimed Kim was responsible for the damage in a fit of frustration.
Nearly two weeks later, a KPGA committee convened to review Kim’s actions. Ultimately, Kim avoided any severe disciplinary measures and received only a formal warning, as reported by Korea JoongAng Daily. Kim also agreed to cover the costs of repairing the locker.
Responding to the backlash, Kim took to social media to clarify the situation, condemning what he called “false reporting” about the incident. “After the loss, I was frustrated, yes absolutely,” Kim admitted. “But I can assure you with absolute truth that I had no intent of damaging any part of the locker – not a single bit.” Kim explained that after the locker door came off, he and others fully removed it for safety reasons. He immediately reported the issue to the DP World Tour and KPGA, and expressed willingness to cover all expenses related to the incident.
Following his apology to both the KPGA and the DP World Tour, Kim initially believed the matter was resolved without further disciplinary action. “There has also been speculation about disciplinary action. I spoke to the tour immediately after the incident. After my apology and offer to pay damages, the matter was considered closed. I am grateful to everyone that has reached out with messages of support. But to them, and everyone else I may have let down, I apologize with all my heart. Love, Tom,” he wrote.
This incident is the latest in a series of controversies involving Kim. Recently, he had on-course clashes with members of Team USA during the Presidents Cup, including Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay, and Xander Schauffele. Kim expressed his frustration with the sportsmanship of his American opponents on the third day of the event at Royal Montreal Golf Club, adding to his already complex public image.
With this recent warning, Kim may aim to steer clear of further controversy as he continues his professional journey on both the PGA and DP World Tours.
