Tommy Fleetwood has opened up about his discussions with his wife Clare regarding the possibility of joining the LIV Golf League, ultimately deciding against it.
Fleetwood, speaking on the Performance People podcast, revealed that his decision was never about the money. The English golfer, who narrowly missed out on the gold medal in Paris to Scottie Scheffler, has always been linked with a move to the breakaway tour but emphasized his focus on performance over financial gain.
Fleetwood was spotted at a LIV Golf event in Las Vegas in February, attempting to keep a low profile. He explained that he was in the city to meet his coach, Butch Harmon, and wanted to experience the LIV tournaments firsthand.
“Most sportsmen don’t actually do it for the money,” Fleetwood said on the podcast. “I never really played for the money. I can look at what I’ve earned at any given time, but for me, it’s about personal satisfaction and performance. Money didn’t factor into my decision, although I understand its appeal for others.”
Discussing the decision with his wife Clare, Fleetwood said they considered the impact on their family. “Clare always tells me, ‘It’s what makes you happy and what you feel is best for you.’ Joining LIV wouldn’t change our life. My focus is on playing my best and achieving my potential as a golfer and athlete.”
Fleetwood added, “Whether I play where I am now or somewhere else, my decision is based on performance, not money.”
Reflecting on his recent performance at the Olympics, Fleetwood expressed mixed emotions after earning a silver medal. He narrowly missed a playoff with Scheffler, who shot a stunning 9-under 62 at Le Golf National. Despite needing a birdie on the final hole, Fleetwood settled for a par.
“Part of me is disappointed, but I never dreamed I’d be an Olympic medallist,” Fleetwood said. “I’m incredibly proud of how the week went and how I played.”
