Tommy Fleetwood will reunite with his long-term caddie, Ian Finnis, for The Open, bringing a heartwarming boost to his support team. Fleetwood, who secured a joint-10th finish last year, is aiming for a title challenge at Royal Troon later this month with Finnis back by his side.
Finnis, returning after undergoing open heart surgery, is one of the most recognizable caddies on tour, known for his lengthy partnership with Fleetwood and his towering six-foot-seven frame. His recent health challenges kept him away from the Valero Texas Open and the Masters Tournament due to a prolonged infection.
In late April, Finnis underwent open heart surgery and has since been on the road to recovery. He is now ready to return to golf, confirmed to be at Fleetwood’s side for The Open. Reflecting on his health ordeal, Finnis shared his gratitude in an interview with The Telegraph, describing himself as “very lucky.”
“They are not exactly sure what happened but bacteria got into a hole in my heart that I’d lived with previously with no problems and then ate away both valves,” Finnis explained. “The amazing surgeon, Mr. Generali, fitted a metal valve and miraculously fixed the other valve, saving me from getting a tissue one which would have needed replacement every seven years.”
Finnis also expressed deep appreciation for the NHS staff, who had him walking the day after surgery in intensive care. Fleetwood has been in close contact with Finnis throughout the ordeal, emphasizing the importance of health over rushing back to work.
Fleetwood is thrilled to have Finnis back as they prepare for The Open. Their partnership has seen them win seven tournaments over six years and helped Fleetwood reach the world’s top 10 rankings. Finnis’ return adds a significant boost to Fleetwood’s aspirations for glory at Royal Troon.
