Tommy Fleetwood Offers Deepest Sympathies Following Tragic Southport Incident
Tommy Fleetwood has taken to X (formerly Twitter) to express his deepest sympathies to the families of children who were tragically killed and injured in his hometown of Southport on Monday. Local police have reported that a 17-year-old suspect from Banks, who was born in Cardiff, is being held on suspicion of murder and attempted murder following the incident on Hart Street in Southport, Merseyside. A knife has been seized by the police.
The incident, which is not being treated as terror-related, has left the motive unclear according to police. Tragically, two children have been killed, nine more children are injured, with six in critical condition, and two adults also have critical injuries. The “ferocious” knife attack took place at a Taylor Swift-themed dance and yoga event. In total, 11 patients with stab injuries were treated by the ambulance service, and some were taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. A major incident was declared at 11:47 a.m. on Monday.

Fleetwood, who is competing for Team GB at the Olympics this week, tweeted after learning of the tragic news:
“I am absolutely heartbroken at the news coming out of Southport today. My thoughts are with the families of the children who were tragically killed and injured. What they are going through is unimaginable. As a parent myself, it’s difficult to even comprehend what has happened and what they have ahead of them, but I know the whole community in Southport will come together to support them. My heart will always be in Southport, and together with my family, we are sending all of our love to the people of my hometown.”
Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy confirmed, “the offender armed with a knife walked into the premises and started to attack the children inside.” She added, “When [officers] arrived, they were shocked to find that multiple people, many of whom were children, had been subjected to a ferocious attack and had suffered serious injuries. As a mum of two daughters and the nanna of a five-year-old granddaughter, I cannot begin to imagine the pain and suffering the families of the victims are currently going through, and I want to send them our heartfelt condolences and sympathies.”
Chief Constable Kennedy noted that two adults were injured while “bravely” trying to protect the children. “We believe that the adults who were injured were bravely trying to protect the children who were being attacked,” she said.
One local reported that one of the two adults injured in the attack locked herself in a room with children to protect them, as eyewitnesses described hearing screaming and seeing children “covered” in blood, suffering from stab wounds.
We also extend our deepest sympathies to all the families of the children who were tragically killed and injured in the Southport attack today.
