Tyrell Hatton has had an exceptional season since joining the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour ahead of the 2024 season. His first win came at LIV Golf Nashville, where he scored 65-64-65. He followed this with a third-place finish at LIV Golf Andalucía.
Hatton’s performances have earned him praise and a spot in one major championship next season. However, he has expressed concerns about the qualification process for majors. Currently, LIV players are technically eligible for majors, but there is no official pathway for them to qualify through LIV performances. Ahead of LIV Golf UK, Hatton commented:
“I know that the guys at LIV are trying to figure it out with the powers that be in golf. I think everyone in the golf world can agree that there are enough fantastic players on LIV that you’d like to see them in fields at majors. Currently, obviously they go off the world ranking system. I think, from a player’s perspective, I hope that something can be worked out where if it goes into 2025 there’s X amount of spots that LIV receive to play in majors.”
He added, “Just with the quality of fields that we have, I don’t see how people could argue that those guys wouldn’t be deserving of a spot in those tournaments.”
Hatton’s comments come as the PGA and PIF are negotiating a merger. Although a framework was agreed upon last year, there haven’t been significant developments toward a merger.
