Former heavyweight boxing contender Steve Cunningham isn’t betting on Tyson Fury to come out on top in his upcoming bout against Oleksandr Usyk. Fury’s lackluster performance in his last fight against Francis Ngannou, barely scraping by with a points win, has raised doubts in the boxing community, with many now favoring Usyk to defeat the ‘Gypsy King’ on May 18. Despite Fury’s confidence in becoming the first undisputed champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999 and his notable physical transformation, Cunningham, who famously knocked down Fury during their February 2013 clash, isn’t convinced Fury will emerge victorious this time.
Cunningham predicts a Usyk win by decision or the possibility of Fury getting disqualified due to excessive leaning and laying on Usyk to tire him down, a tactic Fury often employs. He suggests that Usyk’s team will alert the referee to this strategy, leading to Fury losing points. Cunningham also believes that Fury didn’t take his previous fight against ex-UFC champion Ngannou seriously, contributing to Ngannou’s impressive performance. Despite Ngannou’s undeniable power, Fury managed to withstand his shots and secure the win, albeit not convincingly.
Fury holds a significant height advantage over Usyk, standing at 6 feet 9 inches compared to Usyk’s 6 feet 3 inches, which he’s likely to leverage during their exchanges. As Fury gears up to face Usyk, his improved physical condition and impressive training footage with his father, John, have caught the attention of fans. However, regardless of the outcome, it’s expected that Fury and Usyk will face off twice, with a rematch clause in place.
Looking ahead, a potential matchup between Fury and Anthony Joshua, two British heavyweights, could be on the horizon, possibly in 2025. Joshua is eyeing a fight this year, potentially against the winner of Filip Hrgovic’s bout with Daniel Dubois.
