In a recent encounter before an NFL game against the Los Angeles Rams, Green Bay Packers’ General Manager Brian Gutekunst engaged in discussions with Head Coach Matt LaFleur, setting the stage for the team’s decision-making in the upcoming offseason.
Star running back Aaron Jones, a key asset for the Packers, has faced a challenging season marked by multiple injuries, casting shadows over his future with the team. Despite his limited opportunities to showcase his skills this season, The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman expressed optimism on December 7, suggesting that the Packers are unlikely to sever ties with Jones solely based on his recent health struggles.
Schneidman acknowledged Jones’s effectiveness when healthy and argued for retaining him for another year, emphasizing his integral role both on and off the field. Despite missing several games this season due to injuries, the author highlighted Jones’s significant presence in the organization, raising questions about parting ways with a player of his caliber after a single injury-ridden season.
Jones, who missed three early-season games with a hamstring strain and the last two contests with a knee injury, is now questionable for the upcoming Monday Night Football game against the New York Giants.
While Schneidman acknowledged the potential financial savings the Packers could incur by parting ways with Jones, he argued that the decision should not be solely based on monetary considerations. Jones, a former Pro Bowler, turned 29 in early December and is currently in the third season of his four-year, $48 million contract. The running back is set to count $17.7 million against the team’s salary cap in 2024.
The financial aspect comes into play as the Packers could save approximately $5 million if they cut or trade Jones before June 1. Despite the meaningful savings, Schneidman emphasized the importance of Jones as one of the team’s best playmakers and a locker room leader. He pointed to the team’s willingness to invest heavily in acquiring and extending star running back Jonathan Taylor earlier in the season, underscoring the Packers’ commitment to retaining top talent.
As the Packers weigh the financial implications against the value of retaining a key player like Jones, the decision-making process will undoubtedly shape the team’s roster dynamics in the upcoming offseason.
