PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan has faced significant criticism from players, fans, and the media since the revelation of his secret negotiations with the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) last summer. This news, which emerged during the RBC Canadian Open, shocked many PGA Tour players, especially those who had previously defended Monahan and the tour’s stance in the LIV Golf controversy.
One of Monahan’s most vocal critics is Xander Schauffele. Fresh off his emotional first major victory at the PGA Championship last month, Schauffele did not hold back in a candid interview with The Times, expressing his disappointment with Monahan’s leadership.
“I’ve criticized Jay in the past, but the fact is not once has our commander-in-chief stood up for all of us players and said, ‘This is happening, this is where we’re going,’ and protected us, basically,” Schauffele remarked. He felt particularly let down by Monahan’s apparent lack of support for current tour members.
Schauffele continued, “He didn’t take a stand when anyone left, he didn’t come out to the public and face the music, none of that. Historically in tough situations, you need a strong leader who can make the big waves smaller and make us feel better about what we’re doing. Right now, we don’t have that.”
This isn’t the first time Schauffele has been critical of Monahan, and he is not alone. While players like Rory McIlroy had been supporters of the PGA Tour Commissioner, others, including Matt Fitzpatrick and Viktor Hovland, have also expressed skepticism about Monahan’s leadership.
Hovland, speaking before the PLAYERS Championship in March, noted, “There were some things that were said that have been walked back on and then things have been very contradictory. As a leader of an organization, I will want a person like that to take some ownership and say, ‘Hey, we made a couple of mistakes, but this is how we’re going to rectify it,’ instead of kind of sweeping it under the rug, which I felt like has been done to a certain degree.”
Schauffele emphasized the need for a leader who would stand in front of everyone and lead the way, particularly in challenging situations. The ongoing frustrations with Commissioner Monahan among players highlight the mismanagement of the situation over the past few years and underscore the considerable trust gap that exists between Monahan and the players. Whether this trust can be rebuilt remains uncertain.
Despite his criticisms, Schauffele dispelled any speculation about a potential move to LIV Golf later in the same interview.
Schauffele is now turning his focus to this week’s Memorial Tournament on the PGA Tour, aiming for his first-ever win at one of the tour’s most iconic and respected venues, Jack’s Place.
