Oleksandr Usyk faces skepticism regarding his ability to trouble Tyson Fury in their upcoming undisputed heavyweight title fight scheduled for February 17th in Saudi Arabia. Despite Fury’s history of being knocked down multiple times in his career, boxing legend Roy Jones Jr believes Usyk lacks the “explosive punching power” or the “kryptonite” needed to pose a serious threat to Fury.
Jones, speaking to ProBoxTV, noted the conventional wisdom that the good big guy typically prevails over the big little guy in boxing but acknowledged Usyk as a unique and complex fighter. While expressing his friendship with both competitors, Jones emphasized Usyk’s deficiency in knockout power, contrasting it with past opponents like Deontay Wilder and Francis Ngannou, who had the ability to put Fury on the canvas.
Usyk, who has won two of his five heavyweight fights by stoppage, faces doubts about his punching prowess despite a recent victory over Daniel Dubois in August. On the other hand, Fury’s performance against Ngannou in October, where he narrowly won by a single point, has raised concerns about his mental state and motivation. British boxing great Carl Froch, who initially favored Fury, has shifted his prediction to Usyk, citing Fury’s apparent struggles with weight and motivation.
As the anticipation builds for this clash of heavyweight titans, the boxing community remains divided on whether Usyk’s skill set will be enough to overcome Fury’s resilience and experience in the ring.
