Davis Riley triumphed over World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler to secure his second career PGA Tour title and his first individual victory at the Charles Schwab Challenge. The 27-year-old shot a level-par 70 in challenging final-round conditions, finishing at 14-under par at the Colonial Country Club in Texas. This performance earned him a five-shot lead over Scheffler (71) and Keegan Bradley (67).

Riley celebrated his win on the 18th green with his wife, Alexandra Patton. This victory marks his second PGA Tour title; his first was with Nick Hardy in the team event at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2023. Remarkably, Riley had not achieved a top-10 finish all season before this win. His victory propels him to 55th in the FedEx Cup standings and secures his spots in the upcoming Signature Events at the Memorial (June 6-9) and the Travelers Championship (June 20-23).
“Yeah, I knew coming into today it would be tough with the World No. 1 breathing down my neck, but I hung in there and played some good golf coming down the stretch,” Riley commented.
Scheffler, who was four shots behind at the start of the final day and played in the last group with Riley, struggled and finished with a 1-over 71, five shots behind at 9-under par. This tie for second marks Scheffler’s 10th consecutive top-10 finish on the PGA Tour in 2024 and his sixth top-two finish in his last seven appearances. Despite this, Scheffler remains the FedEx Cup leader, following four victories in his last seven starts. The 10-time PGA Tour winner is set to be arraigned on June 3 after his arrest before the second round of the US PGA last week, just a week before the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst.
Two-time major champion Collin Morikawa (68) finished solo fourth at 8-under par.
The weekend was overshadowed by the tragic death of two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray, who passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 30. Murray had withdrawn from the tournament after the 16th hole in the second round, citing illness. His parents later confirmed that he died by suicide. Murray began the tournament with a 2-under 68 but was 5-over par through 16 holes and just outside the cut mark when he withdrew on Friday.
